SYMUN 2022
In 2022 we celebrate the V Edition of SYMUN, which will take place between 11 and 14 November 2022 at the Getafe Campus of the Carlos III University of Madrid and which will have as its central theme 芦Cooperation: the future of global governance禄.
Recently, we have had to live through historic events such as the pandemic, the war in Ukraine or the supply crisis, which have put our national and international institutions in check. If we have learned anything from all this, it is that in the globalised world in which we live, no state is capable of facing these challenges alone, and that cooperation and multilateral dialogue between nations is essential.
Global governance is a concept that refers to the ideal of universal political cooperation with the aim of managing common challenges. This idea came to prominence after World War I, and materialised in the creation of the League of Nations, promoted by the then President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson. The League of Nations had its ups and downs, and although it was not entirely effective – as it did not achieve its main objective of preventing World War II – it set the precedent for the creation of the United Nations.
Over the 77 years of the UN’s history, the global balance of power has changed considerably. In short, one could say that we have moved from the bipolar world order of the Cold War, dominated by the United States and Russia, to a virtually unipolar world after the triumph of the United States. However, in the current geopolitical context, marked by the economic rise of countries such as China, South Africa and Russia, it is no longer correct to speak of unilateralism, but rather of multilateralism, and therefore of cooperation.
In this context, SYMUN 2022 aims to give a voice to a bright generation of young people who are going to grow up and be educated in a world different from that of their parents. A globalised world in which they will have to stand out in order to achieve closer ties between East and West, North and South, old Europe, etc.
Cooperation in this ever-changing globalised world, together with communication, dynamism and resilience, will be the indispensable ingredients for effective global governance in the new game that lies ahead.
Are you up to the challenge?
In our fifth edition we have a total of 10 committees, divided into three levels for beginner, intermediate and advanced delegates, and among these we have a special historical committee. This system allows participants to match their age and knowledge level to ensure the best possible experience. We are working on the themes of these committees and will soon be able to give you the scoop through social media and our website, but we are sure you are going to love them!
